Caught: the new Opel Insignia

Rüsselsheim, 1 August 2016

As the shots of our Erlkönig photographer, Opel engineers are already working on the next generation of the insignia. There is no official information about the new vehicle while still, but even the heavily camouflaged test car allows first conclusions on the middle-class descendant of Rüsselsheim.

Extended wheelbase and lighter weight

The extended wheelbase of the new Insignia is clearly visible in the pictures. The new GM platform "E2XX", in addition to providing a considerable weight reduction (unconfirmed sources speak of 150 kg) makes this possible. The group related Chevrolet Malibu is already available on this platform and it was with slightly larger dimensions in the section about 160 kilograms lighter than its direct predecessor.

A mix of Opel Astra and Chevrolet Malibu

The still heavily disguised prototype allows still no major conclusions on the future look. The scanned here hatchback but retains the Coupé-like look of Audi A5 Sportback at. The rear lights are likely to resemble those of the current Astra. The grille that is indicated by the cover still strongly reminds the current insignia with its curves. The final front will fall but significantly edgier. Also here you can take the new Chevrolet Malibu as a role model.

For the first time with three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine?

It would be somewhat premature to speak, at this time already possible drives. Nevertheless, tendencies show and we expect in addition to the traditional four cylinders (diesel and gasoline) for the first time with a three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine under the hood of the insignia. Also apply an OPC version (with V6 petrol engine or not, we can't say yet) and a hybrid vehicle as likely. Furthermore can be expected with all bike models and you will have the choice of a manual or an automatic transmission.

Specifications, prices, Premiere and launch

If you want numbers to technical data and prices, you have to wait a little. We expect the launch beginning of 2018. The premiere of the new Opel Insignia could therefore occur at the IAA 2017 in Frankfurt. Whether we then admire also the Sedan model and the station wagon next to the hatchback, remains to be seen.
