The countdown has begun: the 35th Wörthersee meeting begins on May 4, 2016. Tens of thousands of GTI fans will celebrate a giant party for the 40th anniversary of the cult athlete here in the picturesque Reifnitz at the southern shore of Lake Wörth. VW brings all seven generations of the Golf GTI and the new Golf GTI ClubSport. But it doesn't stop there: In the legendary GTI meeting Volkswagen will present an even harsher version of ClubSport in a world premiere. The hitherto strongest series golf will start already in autumn 2016 as a limited Special Edition.
40 years Golf GTI
The three letters of GTI for an icon of the compact sports car stand for 40 years. in 1976, came the first Golf GTI on the market and democratized the sporty driving. The insignia were the lever with a golf ball, a red stripe in the grille and the sports seats with tartan plaid. 5,000 copies were the target, but long ago, the total circulation of all Golf GTI has penetrate the sound barrier of two million copies.
Pulling equal with the civic type-R
Reason is enough for a special limited edition, VW. The ClubSport S has 310 Horsepower and thus draws equal with the Honda Civic type-R. These two models are the most powerful mass-produced built newcomer on the market of the Seat Leon Cupra 290 with the 290 HP of strong TSI followed at number two, then the 280 PS strong VW Scirocco R and the Opel Astra OPC on third place. The ClubSport S should also have a new chassis to fast Nürburgring lap times. We have to wait on the other details such as performance, price and quantity, until the beginning of the GTI meeting, so until May 4. (sl)
