Mercedes-drives: more tracks in the future

Stuttgart, 9. October 2017

Currently, it is in the boardrooms of the major auto companies as a betting office: Which drives will prevail in the near future? What external influences are forcing new engine ideas? The electric car, the bringer of salvation? Now Daimler development chief Ola Källenius tells how Mercedes, together with its sister brands, is gearing up for the next few years.

The engine lives a long time

The Daimler group relies on a multi-pronged powertrain strategy. For good reason, because Källenius remains realistic: "I am quite sure that the burners a long time. We see in the year 2025, a sales share of up to 25 per cent in the case of purely battery-electric cars. This means automatically that a minimum of 75 percent will continue to have a combustion engine on Board, which is then electrified, of course, increasingly."

Offensive electric cars

We take a look at the first Mercedes-Track: the electric drive. By 2022, we would like to bring, according to Källenius, more than ten pure Stromer on the market. Also therefore is built in the Saxon town of Kamenz for 500 million euros, a second battery factory. Now there is the Smart Electric Drive, by 2020, Smart will offer in Europe and the USA are only electric cars. A glimpse of this future was at the Frankfurt IAA in September 2017 with the self-driving study Vision EQ Fortwo.

In 2019, the EQC comes out on the market

2018 Mercedes shows the production version of the EQC, an electric SUV with formal bonds at the GLC: In the first half of 2019, the Bremen-built EQC to come to the dealers. Also the upcoming A-class gets a power offshoot, with the Concept EQA a taste of the IAA in 2017. With one electric Motor per axle, the system performance was about 200 kilowatts, so about 270 HP. 2018 is also the greater equality of power on the Basis of the CCS Standards in the Mercedes-electric cars. Daimler wants to build together with BMW, Ford and the Volkswagen group in 2017, an ultra-fast charging network with up to 350 kW of charging power on the major transport axes in Europe, are planned in about 400 locations.

Mix of hydrogen and a pure stream

In Parallel, the fuel cell celebrates with Mercedes making a Comeback. The particular: In the Pre-series vehicles, the GLC F-Cell, a Lithium-ion battery comes as an additional energy source. They can be externally charged and, apparently, is the "Range Extender" to the next hydrogen filling station. The performance of the GLC F-Cell: 147 kW 200 PS.

Clean Truck

Also in front of the commercial vehicle range of the electric drive does not stop. In addition to the load of the Fuso truck in different sizes, including eCanter, are all-electric versions of the Vito and Sprinter in the work. The latter wants to use the logistics company Hermes.

More and more part-time Stromer

We come to the second Track, the Plug-in Hybrid. This solution is meant when Ola Källenius said that the entire Mercedes Portfolio is to be electrified. Already there is in many of the series from the C-class upwards, a Plug-in Hybrid in the program. In the field of city buses, man offers for the Citaro with a hybrid option, which can be combined with Diesel or Gas. The consumption is expected to fall by up to 8.5 percent.

So economical of the petrol engine is

On the third Track, the classic internal combustion engines was finally. The Diesel, of the Källenius says: "We need him still." Therefore, Mercedes has developed a new self-starter, with four and six cylinders, for example, for the E 220 d and the S 350 d For the future of the gasoline you are planning a Starter-Generator (EQ Boost) and for the six-cylinder in a 48-Volt on-Board network, as well as an electrical auxiliary compressor. Otto engines are used for generating electricity in a quasi "part" to boost (to sail in the short term, additional 250 Newton-metres via the Starter-Generator), with the engine off and recuperate more effectively. Especially the CO2-emissions of the engine should be significantly reduced. The Mercedes S 450 and S 500, corresponding to the six-cylinder already used, a new Generation of four-cylinder units with the internal Code M 264.(rh)
