Bugatti ignites the next level

Molsheim (France), 29 February 2016

It's been almost 11 years now that Bugatti with the Veyron could drive up the record for the fastest production car in the world. 407 km/h, the McLaren F1 was replaced by the then-new Veyron. Now, the French at the Geneva Auto Show show the long-awaited successor (3rd to 13th March 2016). This goes by the name Chiron, is even stronger and travels even faster.

W16 engine with four turbos

Heart of the Chiron is a W16 engine with eight liters of displacement and four turbochargers. These are used for the first time with a so-called registry boot. While all four turbochargers used up 3,800 rpm only two, above this speed, thereby preventing a Turbo lag. The Chiron comes to 1,500 HP and 1,600 nm superlatives, which let in 2.5 seconds from standstill to 100 km/h Sprint the "Hypercar". At this time also the permanent all-wheel drive with differential lock is back involved in front and diff lock, which is coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The exhaust gases of the 16-cylinder are passed through six catalysts which are main KATS as in a mid-size car in the muffler here six times as large of a titanium exhaust system. From there, they get about four tailpipes in the rear and two tail pipes at the bottom of the Chiron into the open.

Carbon monocoque

The chassis of the new Bugatti is a carbon monocoque and a rear wagon also made of carbon fiber. Also the underbody is made of light. So 16 kilograms compared with the Veyron could be saved in these areas alone. The torsion and bending stiffness should be thanks to carbon usage at the level of LMP1 race car. In addition to the chassis also the body is made entirely of carbon fiber. The highlight is the side panel, which comprises only a part of the A-pillar to the stern.

Adaptive chassis with five modes

The landing gear Bugatti in the Chiron relies first on an adaptive system with five driving programs: "Lift", "EB-Auto", "Highway", "Handling" and "Top Speed". The first four modes are limited in the maximum speed to 380 km/h, with a so-called "speed key", how he was used in the Veyron, can the "top speed" mode and the associated maximum speed of 420 km/h be unlocked. The driving programs vary depending on the mode the electronically controlled dampers, the power steering, the all-wheel drive with "easy to drift" - function, the rear axle differential, aerodynamic control as well as stability and brake control. The suspension of Chiron is equipped with directly bolted chassis bushings, what do the vehicle even more direct. New Michelin tires in sizes 20 at the front and 355/25 R 21 on the rear axle to provide 285/30 R even at 420 km/h for a safe driving behaviour.

Brake technology from racing

Complete new developments are the brake calipers and machined from an aluminium. On the front axle, eight titanium Pistons push the pads on carbon ceramic brake discs, which have risen 20 millimeters in diameter and two millimeters in width compared to the Veyron. Six titanium piston work on the rear axle. Special feature: The Pistons have different diameters, to generate a uniform pressure on the disc and to prevent uneven wear.

Active and passive aerodynamics

The aerodynamics of the Chiron consists of active and passive elements. The air, for example, with rail-shaped air Guide components in the direction of the so-called NACA inlets is led on the underbody, that channel the air for better cooling of the drive train. The active aerodynamics finds himself in the front diffusers, the hydraulic diffuser flap at the rear and the rear spoiler with air brake function, and driving modes-based tendency.

Exterior inspired from the history

On the exterior, the motto "Form follows performance" in the foreground stand according to Bugatti. Still a very large vehicle designers have succeeded. Inspiration for the Chiron was the Bugatti type 57SC Atlantic, which means Finn finds himself also on the new vehicle. The 2.80 metre C brace that extends above door and side panel and is made of a special aluminium alloy is particularly striking. At the rear relies on the so-called "SBBR" Bugatti-lamp combining tail, brake, flashing and taillight in a 1.60 m wide band of light. Also the two colors is a typical feature of the Bugatti, ordered their vehicle about 50 per cent of the Veyron buyer two-tone. The headlights in the eight-eyes-design are only 90 mm high and a face that is so much "Baker" than that of the Veyron the Chiron.

Light and luxury in the cockpit

The C clip as a "Room divider" continues in the Interior. However, the design element acts as dimmable continuous row here. The selector of the dual-clutch transmission is milled from a solid aluminium block, the analog speedometer ranges to the 500-km/h limit and is surrounded by three digital displays. The steering wheel is either completely covered in leather or leather-carbon mix available. For the remaining Interior Bugatti offers 31 leather and eight Alcantara colors, as well as three different types of seat.

Over two million euro

The production is scheduled in September 2016. The new Chiron will be limited to only 500 copies and cost 2.4 million euros. And even though the car is presented until now, pre-ordering is for one-third of the vehicles already at Bugatti. (mf)
