Nissan 20-23 concept is a winged electric hot hatch
Designers celebrate an anniversary with a great concept car for the city
As you might guess from those wheel arches, it is quite unlikely that this electric Nissan 20-23 concept will ever go into production. Too bad, but who knows, maybe Nissan will read along. Come on guys, we know you can do it. The 20-23 also celebrates the twentieth anniversary of Nissan Design Europe (NDE).
Apparently the hot hatch has been designed without restrictions and is inspired by Formula E, the online racing world and small, fast Nissans of the past. “The young team here at NDE got to work on the brief and now there is a nice electric city car that you really want to drive around London every day,” says the car brand's vice-chairman of design, Alfonso Albaisa.
The aerodynamics are fine
The Nissan 20-23 concept gets some serious aero parts, such as a heavy splitter, a gigantic rear wing and therefore those ultra-wide wheel arches. We don't know exactly where that scoop on the roof takes air, but the whole thing certainly looks cool. There are also quiet LED lights on the front and back. Perhaps we will see these shapes again on production models.
The large wheels and low tires give the Nissan the appearance of a real hot hatch. Unfortunately, Nissan has not bothered to install one or more electric motors. We're simply told that the Nissan 20-23 concept is a 'sporty electric hatchback'.
The interior of the Nissan 20-23 concept
The design team's emphasis is on the exterior, but that doesn't mean they've forgotten the inside. You enter the cabin by folding up one of the two gull-wing doors. The interior consists of white bucket seats, a square steering wheel with flippers behind it for the driving modes, and not much else. The Formula E inspiration probably comes back here. Only the essentials are there so that you are distracted as little as possible.
All in all, quite an impressive design, right? Perhaps it is a sign that Nissan is considering letting the designers loosen up a bit in the electric future. Although: take away the aero parts of the Nissan 20-23 concept and add a full interior, and you have a three-door hatchback that is smaller than the Leaf and can compete with the upcoming Renault 5. a hotter version will be built. Consider it, Nissan.
