The youngest member of the I. D.-a family Volkswagen is a real hit: The I. D. R Pikes Peak is a pure-electric prototype race car driving, with the Volkswagen at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on 24. June 2018 will compete. The all-wheel drive sports car is an Ambassador for the planned family of VW electric cars.
"Hardness Test"
The Volkswagen brand plans, by 2025, more than 20 pure new electric vehicles. As studies of the compact I. D., the Retro Bulli I. D. Buzz, the SUV's name I. D. Crozz and the Phaeton successor to I. D. Vizzion. The first production model of the I. D. of the family is to be produced from the end of 2019 in Zwickau, Saxony. "We want to be with Volkswagen and the I. D. of the family to the top of the electric mobility," says VW development chief Frank Welsch. "The I. D. R Pikes Peak and the participation of the most famous mountain race in the world has not only symbolic significance but is also a valuable acid test for the development of electric cars in General."
"Race to the clouds" in 4.300 meters of altitude
The international Pikes Peak hill climb by connoisseurs "Race to the clouds" has been held since 1916 near Colorado Springs in the Rocky Mountains and runs over a distance of 19.99 kilometers from the Start in 2.800 meters of altitude up to the summit in 4.302 meters above sea level. Volkswagen had on the Pikes Peak mountain in 1987, the race last with a spectacular Bimotor-Golf with impressive 652 HP participated in the goal but just missed. "So it's high time for a rematch!", so VW Motorsport Director Sven Smeets. "The I. D. R Pikes Peak provides us with an extremely exciting challenge, to show what is in the Motorsport with an electric drive. Our entire team around our driver Romain Dumas is motivated to the hair ends, a new best brand for electric vehicles." The record in the class of the e-prototype is currently at 8.57,118 minutes, and was set up in 2016 by new Zealander Rhys Millen.(sl)
